The answer that he gave was: Proximity is power.
Simple right? Confusing also. Here is what he meant…
“ If I wanted to make a movie, it would be easy because I have so many clients who are producers, actors, and heads of studios; I’m around them all the time. In fact, they put me in a dozen movies at that time, without my even asking, because I was in their proximity. If I wanted to make a deal at IBM, I probably make it work, but it would be a lot harder because I’m not in proximity. In order to hit my financial goals, I got in proximity with investment bankers. Two years later, I made a deal that was worth $400 million!”
Most people don’t get the right career advice.
People think that it comes down to learning the perfect skill or finding the perfect company. They think that it has to do with finding the one thing you are “passionate” about. It’s not that, and neither it is the advice that you have to work harder than everyone around you.
These are all great things but you’re at the serious disadvantage if you’re only doing that.
It all comes down to one thing and one thing only.
And that is…
BUILDING A POWERFUL NETWORK
According to a recent study, it showed that upwards of 85% of job openings are filled through networking. 85% is a huge figure. It doesn’t matter if you have the “perfect resume”, the knowledge or the “right skills”. It doesn’t even matter if you’re passionate about it, nothing matters if you don’t surround yourself with the right people. You will get everything you’ve ever wanted in your career if you surround yourself with the right people.
Surround yourself with the right people, build a powerful network, and get what you want.
